Fort George - Lake George Battlefield Park
Lake George Battlefield Park, Lake George, NY. This little altered historic s
ite was where the British defeated the French in the Battle for Lake George in September 1755; where the American Provincials camped and died during the French siege upon Fort William Henry in 1757; where General Abercrombie launched his unsuccessful attack to take Fort Ticonderoga from the French in 1758; where General Amherst launched his successful 1759-1760 campaign against the French and Canada during the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution, this site was the 4th British Post captured by the Colonials in May 1775; the Headquarters and General Hospital of the Northern Army in 1776; a major supply installation for the Northern Army in 1775-1777; and a main post for protecting America's Northern Frontier from 1777-1780. Today, visitors can walk the site, read interpretive signs and visit historic encampments and view historic reenactments during special events.
